Why carousels need normalising
Instagram decides a carousel's aspect ratio from the first slide. Every following photo is then forced into that frame, cropped by an algorithm that does not know what your subject is. Heads get cut off, horizons drift, and a set that looked deliberate in your camera roll turns ragged in the feed.
Normalising first means the crop happens once, predictably, from the centre — and you see exactly what you are going to get before anything is uploaded.
Getting more out of a carousel
- Lead with your strongest image. It sets the shape for the whole post and it is the only one most people see.
- Stay under ten. Completion drops steeply after the first few slides; twenty is a limit, not a target.
- Grade them together. A consistent look across slides does more for coherence than any layout trick — run them through Filters with the same recipe.
Questions
Why do my carousel photos look inconsistent?
Instagram picks the aspect ratio from your first slide and then fits every other photo into that same frame. Mixing a portrait shot with a landscape one means something gets cropped or padded, and you do not control which part survives. Normalising every photo to one shape first puts that decision back in your hands.
What shape should a carousel be?
4:5 portrait takes the most screen height in the feed, which is why most creators use it. Square is the safest if the same images also need to sit in your profile grid. 1.91:1 landscape is mainly for wide scenes and ads.
How many photos can I add?
Instagram allows 20 slides per carousel, and this tool caps at 20 for the same reason.
Does it reorder my photos?
No. Slides come out in the order you selected them and are numbered so you can upload them in the same order.
Will it stretch my photos?
Never. Every photo is centre-cropped to the target shape, so proportions are preserved and only the edges are trimmed.
